The Ex-Gay Movement: A Fully De-powered Jesus

| November 12, 2013 | 1 Comment

I just had this thought last weekend and ran it by some people who are dear to me. They actually agreed with the logic behind it (two of them surprised me). We all agreed that we probably are misunderstanding the gay issue as Christians, but here is my logical breakdown of the Pray Away the Gay/Gay-to-Straight/Ex-Gay Movement. It’s changed so much over the years and even now their flagship group, Exodus International, is no longer operating but back under a new name. I think the movement grew out of homophobia more than anything else because it involves shaming gay people right from the moment they realize they’re gay.

No, really, if you come out as gay or just admit that you are attracted to someone of the same sex, this community immediately tells you that you have to “come out of that sinful lifestyle,” before you’ve even engaged the lifestyle (I’ve witnessed it). (Also, what do they define as a gay lifestyle? The sex? Some aren’t having it. The clubs and bars? Some aren’t socializing that way. So, what is the gay lifestyle exactly, ex-gay-ers?)

Look, you've been teased for being gay when you were younger. Now you're tired of being teased, which happens to everyone. Deal.

Anyway, here is my breakdown over the Ex-Gay Movement and how they’ve involved an all-powerful Jesus in the movement and how they took all of his power away in the end. I didn’t know you could do that to Jesus, but here we are. What are your thoughts? I’d be interested to know.
